Let there be light

'And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.' (Genesis 1:3-4)

In the Christian tradition  the light is a sign of God's presence. The Holy Scripture uses this symbol several times:
  • 'In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.' (John 1:4-5)
  • When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
  • Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” (John 12:36)
  • a light for revelation to the Gentiles (Luke 2:32)
  • But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (1 Peter 2:9)
  • God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. (1 John 1:5)

This is the time of the year when in the Northern hemisphere the days become shorter and the nights grow longer. This is the time of the year when the Christians remember those who walked on this earth before us and were visible signs of God's presence in this world. This is the time of the year when we are called to be testimonies of the Lord among the people.
